Disney have many different parks all over the world including two in North America, so they couldn't call them Disneyland USA 1 and Disneyland USA 2, therefore they are Disney World and Disneyland.
The main difference is location. Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida meanwhile Disneyland is in Anaheim, California.
Disneyland was built first but the land around it was quickly bought by businesses wanting to profit from the tourists visiting Disneyland. When Walt Disney wanted to build his new park he wanted lots of space so the visitors could have this prefect view of the castle without other shops spoiling it.
Therefore, when Walt starting building Disney World he bought 25,000 acres in the heart of Florida.
So why the quick history lesson? Because another big difference is the space and actually theme parks at the resorts.
Disneyland has two parks, a shopping district, and three Disney hotels, whereas Disney World has 4 different parks, 2 water parks, a shopping district and over 25 hotels.
I plan on explaining the different parks in future blogs, so keep an eye out.
